Speaker:

Welcome friends.

2

:

This week on doing divorce Different,

we had Melissa Miel, Slavic.

3

:

She's an attorney, she's a

sweetheart, she's a become a friend.

4

:

Um, but she was on and she

was talking about prenups.

5

:

We made it a two part series.

6

:

So go back and listen to Tuesdays

episodes, we talk about prenups, and then

7

:

in the upcoming week we're gonna talk

about postnuptial and collaborative law.

8

:

And here's the thing.

9

:

This podcast is helpful whether

you're single, maybe thinking about

10

:

getting married, whether you're

divorced and maybe gonna get remarried

11

:

because prenuptial agree agreements.

12

:

Melissa talks about how they actually

strengthen a marriage, and I think

13

:

maybe they can get a bad rap, right?

14

:

Because you think about like.

15

:

I don't know, like the movies that you've

seen where the rich guy or the rich lady

16

:

makes someone sign a prenup and then they

leave 'em and they're left with nothing.

17

:

So that's not really what it's about,

especially if you do it collaboratively

18

:

and really an important, uh,

point to have attorneys involved.

19

:

Um, but it is a way.

20

:

To really be serious and

thoughtful about your marriage.

21

:

And I'm looking to do a study, so if

anyone has any information, and I'll

22

:

keep digging, um, to find out whether

or not people with prenups divorce more

23

:

or less than people who don't have them.

24

:

But here's the thing that was

kind of eyeopening to me, is that.

25

:

When a young couple is getting

married, they often don't realize

26

:

the extent of this binding agreement.

27

:

I mean, it's a binding agreement between

the two of you and God and the law.

28

:

So it is like a partnership and you

wouldn't go into a business partnership.

29

:

Without writing down how things would

go, um, how they're gonna work, how

30

:

it would go if it, if you separate it.

31

:

Because here's the thing, you

get to do it and God help you.

32

:

I don't want you to end up divorced.

33

:

And I think that the kind of people who

do prenups together collaboratively are

34

:

often planners and working together.

35

:

So I feel like.

36

:

They've got a better start

to their marriage already.

37

:

But it helps you look at when you're at

a point when emotions aren't high and

38

:

you're at a point in time and you can

talk about what your thoughts are at that

39

:

time for what would happen in the future.

40

:

And we know things can change and,

and you can groove with that, but.

41

:

It's so helpful, one to make

you realize what a important

42

:

commitment you are making.

43

:

I think it's huge that it's be

that God is your is there and he's,

44

:

you know, binding you together.

45

:

But you also have to

realize the law is there.

46

:

And I'm gonna be honest friends, I have

so many couples that come to me angry.

47

:

Why can't we just say we

wanna be divorced and be done?

48

:

You can't because you are in a legal.

49

:

Legally, you know, written up partnership.

50

:

And so you can't just

break away that easily.

51

:

You have to go through paperwork.

52

:

So take the time to really look

at it and set yourself up to a

53

:

great marriage, because couples

who can communicate together.

54

:

About what they would want in a

prenup, how they would want things

55

:

to be if they did end up divorce.

56

:

Looking at, well, if we have kids,

what would we want it to look like?

57

:

It is going to help you.

58

:

God help you.

59

:

You do get to the point

where you need a divorce.

60

:

At least you can look back

and say, you know what?

61

:

This is what we agreed on.

62

:

Because when emotions run

high, it's really, really hard

63

:

to use that prodigy brain.

64

:

It's hard to reason.

65

:

It's hard to make really good decisions,

and we do everything we can to help you.

66

:

I try to help you through

mediation to keep that brain.

67

:

Um, that prodigy brain working so you

can make good decisions, but if you had

68

:

talked about it in in advance, you'd

be set up and I think you might have a

69

:

better chance of not getting there because

you're already showing that you're working

70

:

together, that you can communicate well.

71

:

That's a big part of what you need

in a great marriage, and you're

72

:

going in with eyes wide open.

73

:

You know what this partnership looks

like and it's not gonna be a surprise

74

:

if something NFU happens and you,

you've gotta change things around.

75

:

So I agree with Melissa when she said

prenups can build stronger marriages.

76

:

Go listen to the episode.

77

:

It's so good.

78

:

And she's so awesome.

79

:

She's a great teacher.

80

:

Thanks for being here.
